2011: Quickly established himself as a presence on the backline, starting 18 games and becoming one of only two freshmen to appear in all 19 matches... Finished second among position players in minutes played with 1,561... Played 90 or more minutes 13 times, including five matches in a row from Sep. 24 (SIU-Edwardsville) to Jacksonville (Oct. 14).

Prep: Played for Aaron Smith at Holt High School... Division I state finalists with Holt High School and state cup finalists with TNT Dynamite in 2009... All-State in 2009 and 2010... All-District all four years of high school... Named to the Lansing State Journal All-Decade team... Scored 75 goals (including a school-record 32 in 2009) and 46 assists during his high school career.

Personal: Son of Craig and Rhonda Gates... Born in Mexico, where his father relocated in the mid-80s as a missionary; Ben will major in Bible Missions at Lipscomb in order to become a missionary himself after his collegiate career... Chose Lipscomb because the school "provided an environment that would educate, encourage and challenge my walk with Christ."
