John Michael Hayden

John Michael Hayden enters his second season with the Lipscomb men's soccer program. Charles Morrow, head coach, thinks Hayden might just be the diamond in the rough he was looking for.

"We had a tremendous pool of candidates and John Michael certainly stood out from the group," Morrow said.

Hayden came to Lipscomb after spending one year in the coaching ranks at the University of Louisville, where he helped guide the Cardinals to a 14-6-1 record and an Elite 8 appearance in the NCAA National Tournament.

"John Michael has been a great asset to our program at Louisville and we are grateful for him investing in our program," Louisville head coach Ken Lolla said. "He is a tremendous addition to Lipscomb."

For two and a half years, Hayden served as the Director of Coaching with the Kentucky Fire Juniors USYSA club.

While with the Fire, Hayden earned the highest form of coaching education by obtaining a United States Soccer Federation National "A" License.

Hayden had a celebrated youth career, where he was named a two-time Parade Magazine All-American at Trinity High School in Louisville, Kentucky . He was named NSCAA/adidas Kentucky Player of the Year along with Gatorade and Eurosport State Player of the Year honors. Before signing with Inidana University as a midfielder, Hayden was listed as a top 25 recruit with Soccer America.

After being redshirted as a freshman, Hayden helped guide the Hoosiers to back-to-back National Championships in 2003 and 2004.

Perhaps the highlight of his career came in 2004, when he scored on an overtime header to defeat the third-ranked Maryland Terripans to put his Hoosiers in a title bout with UC Santa Barbara in the NCAA College Cup.

In his sophomore season, Hayden had career highs across the board, (7) goals, (4) assists and (18) total points. He also tied for the team lead in game-winners (6).

Hayden garnered individual honors of Big Ten All-Confernece selection in 2004 and 2006, along with being named to the NCAA College Cup All-Tournament team during the 2004 NCAA championship run.

The Houston Dynamo selected Hayden as the 13th overall pick in the Major League Soccer Super Draft in 2007. His professional debut came on July 10, 2007 in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup against Charleston Battery. In his rookie season, the Dynamo won the MLS Cup Championship.

In May 2009, he was loaned out to USL-1 side Cleveland City Stars. While there, he landed USL-1 team of the week accolades following performances against the Portland Timbers and the Minnesota Thunder.

January 2010, Hayden signed with his hometown's Louisville Lightning from the Professional Arena Soccer League.

On December 1, 2007 Hayden married Hollie Minogue, who played soccer for the University of Louisville women's team. They have one son, Liam.
