"[It was a] good match overall,” men’s assistant coach Mike Sherman said. “The Bisons are making good decisions out there and playing with great energy. We just need to execute when we get opportunities on break points and set points, and it will all come together."
Austin Peay gained an early lead on the Bisons when they swept the doubles point.
Strecker and senior Joe McArdle fell to Henrique Norbiato and Sean Bailey 8-4 at the No. 1 doubles spot, while sophomore Colby Shaw and freshman David Salazar came up just shy of a win at No. 2, falling to Jasmin Ademovic and Remi Calleja in a tiebreaker 8-7 (10).
Senior Mario Hernandez and freshman Miguel Cortez were defeated by Joao Pagan and John Storie 8-5 at No. 3.
With a 1-0 deficit, the Bisons entered singles play but went on to post only one win.
Strecker came back in the third set to defeat Norbiato at the No. 1 singles spot, winning 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 and recording the Bisons’ lone win for the night.
At No. 2, Salazar was defeated by Ademovic 6-2, 6-3, while Shaw fell at No. 3 to Bailey 6-3, 6-1.
Hernandez came up short at No. 3, falling to Calleja 6-4, 6-3. At No. 4, Cortez fell just short of taking the match to a third set, losing in a second set tiebreaker 6-3, 7-6 (5). Sophomore Daniel Lee also played a solid match but was unable to pull out a victory, losing to Storie in a third set tiebreaker 2-6, 7-6(5), 10-8.
The Bisons are back in action Friday, February 11th, when they face North Alabama at Richland Country Club.
