"The Bisons were strong mentally as the wind made for extremely tough conditions, but in the end, ETSU was too tough,” men’s assistant coach Mike Sherman said. “Each guy learned something out there today, and, hopefully, we can apply it to our matches next week."
The Bisons started out the match with doubles play but were swept by ETSU in all three matches.
At No. 1, senior Joe McArdle and freshman Oliver Strecker were defeated 8-2 by Grega Teraz and Charles Bottoni. Freshman Miguel Cortez and sophomore Colby Shaw fell to Jesus Bandres and Sander Gille 8-4 at No. 2.
At No. 3, freshman David Salazar and sophomore Tanner Brown posted the strongest results for the Bisons but fell to Jorge Varon and Robin Akser 8-7 (9).
With a 1-0 deficit, the Bisons headed into singles play. The Bisons only point of the match came with a win at No. 4 singles. Brown defeated Varon in a three set match with a super tiebreaker acting as the third set. Brown won 7-6, 3-6, 14-12.
At No. 1 singles, Strecker posted a solid score but came up just short of the victory, falling 6-4, 7-6(5) to Gille. Junior Chad Pierron was defeated at No. 3 by Bandres 6-0, 6-2, while Salazar fell at No. 4 to Juan Ramirez 6-2, 6-3.
Cortez also posted a three set match but could not pull out the win, losing to Jeremy Connevalle at No. 5 6-2, 5-7, 6-0. At No. 6, Shaw lost to Roger Ordeig 6-2, 6-4.
