Bisons fall to UNF

Sunday, March 27, 2011

The Bisons suffered a tough 4-3 loss on Friday afternoon, when they fell to Atlantic Sun conference foe North Florida at the Huston-Marsh-Griffith Tennis Center. With the loss, the Bisons' A-Sun record evens back out to 3-3.

"The guys laid it all out there tonight trying to get the win for Lipscomb," men's assistant coach Mike Sherman said. "Unfortunately, we came out on the wrong end of a tight match. We are a young team, and this loss will only harden this team's resolve for our match against Jacksonville. We will continue to push ourselves to get the doubles point so that we can carry some momentum into the singles."

The Bisons got off to a slow start after dropping the doubles point 2-1 to open the match with a 1-0 deficit.

Freshman Oliver Strecker and senior Joe McArdle picked up the Bisons' only doubles win at No. 1, with a victory over Beauregard Treyz and Anton Rabinov 8-5.

At No. 2, freshman Miguel Cortez and sophomore Colby Shaw fell to Daniel Sotomarino and Hleb Maslau 8-1. The Bisons' fell just short of winning the point with a close loss at No. 3 doubles. Freshman David Salazar and sophomore Tanner Brown lost 8-6 to Pedro Davisson and Moritz Buerchner.

Down 1-0, the Bisons headed into singles play; where they went on to pick up three wins at No. 2, 4 and 5.

Salazar recorded a win for the Bisons at No. 2, when he defeated Sotomarino in a three set match, prevailing 5-7, 6-3, 6-2. At No. 4, Brown also came out on the winning end of a three set match, defeated Leonardo Nahar 6-1, 2-6, 6-2.

Cortez posted the Bisons' final win at No. 5 with a three set 6-1, 2-6, 7-5 win over Davisson.

Strecker made a strong showing but came up just short of the win at No.1 in a three set match that came down to tiebreakers in each set. Strecker eventually fell to Maslau 7-6(4), 6-7(4), 7-6(3).

Junior Chad Pierron fell at No. 3 to Buerchner by a score of 6-2, 6-2, and Shaw was defeated at No. 6 by Rabinov 6-4, 6-4.

The Bisons will return to the courts Saturday, March 26, when they face off against Jacksonville at Richland Country Club. Match play will begin at 7 p.m.
