NASHVILLE, Tenn.- The Lipscomb men’s tennis team fell 6-1 to Vanderbilt Sunday at the Vanderbilt indoor courts. The loss dropped the Bisons to 1-2 on the year.
Freshman Rob Mitchell pulled off the only singles victory for Lipscomb as he defeated Jeff Offerdahl in straight sets 6-3, 6-2.
“Today, Rob Mitchell played probably the best match for him in both the fall and spring,” said head coach Mario Hernandez. “He had a great win today.
”The guys competed pretty well today.”
In doubles Miguel Cortez & Stuart Tierney played against Vanderbilt’s Rhys Johnson & Ryan Smith. The match remained unfinished at 5-4.
“I really thought our doubles play was quite good and that can become a strength for us in the near future,” Hernandez said. “Singles play wasn't bad either. Vanderbilt is tough, but we are tough as well.”
David Salazar & Mitchell lost to VU’s Suresh Eswaran & Pen Binet 6-4.
On the singles end, Salazar played at No.1 and lost to Johnson 6-3, 4-6, (10-8).
“David Salazar had a very tough match against a guy that has been ranked near the top 50 in the nation,” said Hernandez. “He played extremely well and fought hard.”
Cortez had a tough fight in the first set against Smith that ended in a tiebreaker. The match ended with the score of 6-5(7), 6-2 for VU.
Tierney at No. 2 and Nacor Ibanez at No. 6 lost in straight sets.
“There were positives across the board as well as things we need to improve on, “said Hernandez. “It's early in the season and we will continue to look to improve."
The Bisons will be back in action against Austin Peay next weekend.
