NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Lipscomb men’s tennis will be facing Ball State on Saturday and Southern Illinois on Sunday. Matches will be played at Huston- Marsh Griffith- Tennis Center at Lipscomb.
They are the first outdoor matches of the season at home.
“Ball State and Southern Illinois are both strong teams that are similar in level to many of the teams we will face in conference,” said Lipscomb men’s tennis coach Mario Hernandez.
The Bisons, depleted by injuries and unable to have a player available for every match, are 1-5 this season season.
“In my opinion, this is a perfect set up for us in terms of having tough competition the week before conference play begins,” coach Hernandez said. “I felt that last week was a step in the right direction for us as a team and we want to make sure we take one more step forward this week as well.”
Coach Hernandez is not using the injury problems as an excuse.
“I really feel that this weekend presents an opportunity for us to earn some hard fought victories that will give us more confidence going into conference,” coach Hernandez said. “The guys can do it and I have a 100 percent belief in them.”
Team captain David Salazar is also confident that the Bisons will respond at a high level in their final matches before opening Atlantic Sun Conference play against Mercer on March 14.
“They are both great teams,” Salazar said. “But this is our chance to turn it around and get ready for the conference next week.”
“I will not be playing this weekend but I am hoping to get back on court on Monday and have a full week of training before conference starts.”
Matches will begin at 10 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.
