Men's tennis sets ground for season with win against Alabama A&M

The men’s tennis team held its season opener on Friday night at Whitworth Tennis Center. For the Bisons, it was a season opener that had been dreamed of.

Entering the 2009 season with just one win in the previous year, the Bisons swept their match against the University of Alabama A&M by a score of 7-0.

Doubles winners for the Bisons were Mario Hernandez & Daniel Hangstefer, who beat Stevon Walker & Johnny Singleton 8-0. Also winning for the Bisons was James Murrell & Chad Pierron, who defeated Gregory Rodgers & Evan Brown 8-0.

“I think the guys did well today. All things considered, you never know how they are going to come off of a couple month break. But, they did well and had a good match,” said Coach Andrew Harris.

The Bisons continued strong in their singles matches, taking all wins. Daniel Hangstefer defeated Stevon Walker, 6-0, 6-1. Chad Pierron defeated Gregory Rodgers, 6-1, 6-0.

Both Mario Hernandez and James Murrell defeated their singles opponents; Evan Brown and Johnny Singleton, 6-0, 6-0.

Joe McArdle defeated Bertaud Ngomsi, 8-0. Bruno Melibeu won by default.

The Bisons travel to Austin Peay University in Clarksville, Tenn. on January 31st.

“That will be a little more of a difficult test in terms of gaging where we are at right now,” said Harris. “But we are looking forward to it.”

The Bisons next home match will be February 13th at 7:00 p.m. against UT-Martin. The location is to be announced.
