"The guys learned an important lesson,” men’s assistant coach Mike Sherman said. “Never, ever, underestimate your opponent. This was a tough loss, but we will learn from this and get better over the next three weeks. We need to focus on our strengths and our identity and move on."
The Bisons made a solid showing in doubles play, but, unfortunately, could not pull out the point, falling 2-1.
Freshman Oliver Strecker and senior Joe McArdle recorded the Bisons’ lone doubles win at No. 1 when they defeated Lance Lvovsky and Logan Shalmi 8-4.
At No. 2, freshman David Salazar and sophomore Tanner Brown came up just shy of the victory, but fell to Larry Condez and Jose Fantova 8-6. Freshman Miguel Cortez and sophomore Colby Shaw were defeated at No. 3 by Fernando Bano Lopez and Matthew Hansen 8-5.
With a 1-0 deficit heading into singles play, the Bisons continued on to win four of their six singles matches. The Bisons’ points came at No. 1, 2 and 6 singles.
At No. 1, Strecker steadily defeated Fantova 6-4, 6-3, while Salazar picked up steam in the second set at No. 2 to beat Bano Lopez 7-6(3), 6-3. Shaw posted the Bisons’ final point of the match with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Shalmi at No. 6.
Junior Chad Pierron was defeated at No. 3 6-3, 6-2 by Lvovsky, while Brown fell to Condez at No. 4 6-4, 6-3. Cortez lost to Hansen at No. 5 by a score of 6-3, 7-5 to close out the match.
The Bisons will next travel to Spartanburg, S.C., on Friday, April 1 to face off against A-Sun foe USC Upstate. Match play will begin at 10 a.m.
