ATHENS, Ga. -- Behind a stellar performance from newcomer Stuart Tierney, the Lipscomb men’s tennis team returned to Nashville after posting eight wins in the “Southern Intercollegiate Championships” hosted by the University of Georgia.
Tierney led the Bisons’, picking up four wins before losing in the finals to Calum Gee from Davidson 6-1, 6-4. The Hillsboro, Ore., native breezed through the first three rounds, beating Elberet Beekman from Atlantic Sun foe Mercer 6-1, 6-2 before topping Citadel’s Peter Bleach 6-2, 6-1. In third-round action, he dominated North Carolina State’s Beck Bond, only dropping two games before he went on to beat Minnesota’s Eric Frueh in the semifinals 6-3, 6-4. Only Davidson’s Calum Gee could stop Tierney’s run downing the rookie 6-1, 6-4 in the championship of the bracket.
"The Bisons played hard, despite the high level of competition this weekend,” assistant coach Mike Sherman said. “The coaching staff is especially proud of Stuart Tierney, making his way to the finals. There is no denying his special talent, and we are excited to see what he can do when the spring season rolls around. Congratulations to him.”
Junior Colby Shaw also posted a win for the Bisons, winning his first round match over Mississippi State’s Trey Seymour 6-1, 6-3.
Freshman Daniel Hernandez added two wins to the total with victories in the first two rounds over Citadel’s Elliot Sperr and Kentucky’s Ryuju Wardell, 6-3, 6-4 and 6-0, 6-1 respectively.
Senior Chad Pierron picked up a win in the consolation bracket by defeating Mercer’s John Bauerle 6-2, 6-4.
The Bisons were unable to record a doubles win for the weekend but Sherman said, given the level of competition, the men are continuing to improve in all aspects.
“From a team standpoint, doubles continues to improve from week to week,” Sherman said. “Looking forward, we are now going to put more emphasis on the mental side of the game. We want our guys to be mentally tough, no matter the surrounding circumstances. That statement is easy to say, but very hard to do."
The Bisons will hit the practice courts to prepare for their next tournament. Lipscomb heads to Clarksville, Tenn. on Oct. 7 to compete in a tournament at Austin Peay.
