Ball State hands Bison loss in final day of Dayton Invite

DAYTON, Ohio –The Lipscomb men’s tennis team posted its first loss at the Dayton Invite on Sunday falling 6-1 to Ball State after downing Army and Air Force on Saturday.

"Coming out of Saturday's matches against Army and Air Force, both teams were going to have to exhibit some mental strength to create a great match,” head coach Andrew Harris said. “Ball State certainly handled that much better then we did. This is an important match to take note of because all of our league matches are back-to-back days and making sure you are ready to go the following day after having grueling matches the previous day will be critical for our success.

“I think we could have handled that side of things better than we did, and we will go back and learn from that. Austin Peay is coming up this weekend, and I know the guys are excited about that."

The men started the match with singles, rather than doubles, and Ball State quickly jumped out in the lead and clinched the match, winning 5 of the 6 matches.

The Bison’s lone point came at No. 6 singles. Sophomore Miguel Cortez posted a three-set win over Ball State’s Austin Sansone, winning 6-3, 6-7 (8), 11-9.

Senior Oliver Strecker fell just short of a victory, falling at No. 1 to Dalton Albertin 6-4, 3-6, 10-7.

At No. 2, sophomore David Salazar was defeated by Ray Leonard 6-1, 6-0, while freshman Daniel Hernandez lost at No. 3 to Zane Smith 6-0, 6-2.

Freshman Stuart Tierney came up short at No. 4, losing to Austin Smith 6-4, 6-2, and junior Colby Shaw lost to Patrick Elliott 6-2, 7-5.

With the match already decided at 5-1, both teams continued on into doubles play.

The Bison were swept by Ball State, losing all three doubles matches and awarding Ball State their final point to take the 6-1 win.

At No. 1, Strecker and Hernandez were defeated by Z. Smith and Derek Carpenter 8-5, while Shaw and Salazar fell to Leonard and A. Smith 8-1 at No. 2. Cortez and senior Chad Pierron lost at No. 3 to Andres Monroy and Patrick Elliott 8-6.

The loss drops Lipscomb’s record to 3-4 with only three matches remaining before the start of conference play.

The Bison continue road action next weekend facing Austin Peay on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 10 a.m. in Clarksville, Tenn.
