Bison sweep North Alabama in final tune up before A-Sun play

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Lipscomb men’s tennis team posted its first shutout of the spring season Sunday, defeating  North Alabama 7-0 at the Huston-Marsh-Griffith Tennis Center in Nashville.

The match was the Bison’s final competition before entering into conference play.

"Our biggest goal today was to play a complete match in doubles and singles,” Lipscomb head coach Andrew Harris said. “We moved the doubles line up around and inserted Miguel Cortez back in the doubles line up, which was great to have him back. The guys did a solid job taking care of their courts in singles and staying focused. Now, the attention turns to Belmont and everyone needs to be ready to go for conference."

The Bison opened the match by securing the doubles point with wins in two of the three doubles matches.

Junior Oliver Strecker and sophomore Miguel Cortez posted a win for the Bison at the No. 1 spot, defeating Matt Feury and Alexey Kavalenka 8-5.

The Bison’s other doubles victory came at No.3, where junior Colby Shaw and sophomore David Salazar took down Rob Whitsitt and Alex Weber 8-4.

No. 2 doubles was Bison’s lone loss for the day. Junior Tanner Brown and freshman Stuart Tierney were defeated by Constantin Witten and Mirko Sommerfeld in a tight 8-7 loss.

With a 1-0 lead, the Bison moved into singles competition and went on to sweep all six singles matches.

At No. 1, Strecker defeated Witten 6-0, 6-0, while Salazar pulled out a three set victory over Feury at No. 2, winning 4-6, 6-4, 10-8.

Freshman Daniel Hernandez defeated Kavalenka at No. 3, 6-2, 6-2, and Tierney won at No. 4, defating Sommerfield 6-2, 6-1.

At No. 5, Brown posted a 6-0, 6-1 win over Whitsitt, while Shaw defeated Jonathan Vick 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6.

The Bison hope to carry the momentum from their win over UNA into Atlantic Sun Conference competition, which will begin on Saturday. The Bison travel down the street to Belmont’s Tennis Complex where match play will begin at 10 a.m.
