Stetson too tough on Senior Day for Bisons

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Lipscomb men’s tennis team will make its first back-to-back appearance in the Atlantic Sun Conference tournament this year, after clinching a postseason berth despite their season finale 5-2 loss to Stetson on Saturday at the Huston-Marsh-Griffith Tennis Center in Nashville.

The loss came on Senior Day, where the Bison boasted one lone senior.

"Certainly on the men's side today we didn’t come out like we needed to in doubles,” head coach Andrew Harris said. “Our execution continues to be something we need to examine and look at. I was extremely proud of Chad Pierron today having the opportunity to play singles in his last home match. Chad has been a first class guy for our program, and I think he will be a tremendous ambassador in our community. The guys need to get some rest and then get ready for next weekends tournament at ETSU."

The Bisons began the match with an early 1-0 deficit after dropping the doubles point 3-0.

Junior Oliver Strecker and sophomore Miguel Cortez fell to Njal Stene and Hans Adrian Riseng 8-5 at No. 1, while junior Tanner Brown and freshman Stuart Tierney were defeated by Maksim Levanovich and Chester Espie 8-4 at No. 2.

At No. 3, sophomore David Salazar and junior Colby Shaw lost to Didrik Berg and Nathan Debut 8-5.

Down 1-0, the Bisons came back to post two wins in singles, but unfortunately could not pull out the match.

Strecker pulled out a three-set win at No. 1, defeating Levanovich 6-3, 4-6, 7-5, and Salazar recording a win at No. 3 over Berg, winning 6-4, 6-4.

Freshman Daniel Hernandez fell at the No. 2 spot to Stene 6-4, 6-2, while Shaw was defeated at No. 4 by Debut 6-4, 6-4.

At No. 5, Cortez came up short against Riseng, losing 6-4, 6-2, and senior Chad Pierron fell to Espie 6-4, 6-4.

Lipscomb finishes the regular season with a 4-5 conference record heading into tournament play next weekend in Johnson City.  The No. 4 seed, the Bisons take on USC Upstate at 8:30 a.m. at Buddy Hartsell Courts.
