Men's tennis to open season at Southern Intercollegiate

To kick off the 2012 season, the Lipscomb men’s tennis team will head to Athens, Ga., to compete in the 2012 Southern Intercollegiate Championship.  The tournament begins Friday, Sept. 7, and will end on Monday, Sept. 10.

Twenty-three teams will appear in the tournament taking place at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on the University of Georgia campus.

In addition to  fellow A-Sun competitors Florida Gulf Coast, Kennesaw State, North Florida, Mercer and East Tennessee State University the field includes Armstrong Atlantic, The Citadel, Clemson, Florida, Furman, Georgia, Georgia College, Georgia Southern, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Liberty, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Presbyterian, UT Chattanooga, Tennessee Tech and Vanderbilt.

The tournament will be set into at least two singles divisions and two doubles divisions, with a championship following each division. First round losing teams will play at least two rounds of singles consolation, but there will be no doubles consolation play.

Initial draws will be sent out Thursday afternoon, but changes are expected.

Lipscomb men’s coach Andrew Harris believes the tournament will be a great time to help build the team.

“This is our first tournament this fall for the guys,” Harris said. “Our big priority is seeing what they’ve improved on this summer, so we can see what they need to improve on for the remainder of the fall.”

Harris is hopeful the Bisons will make positive strides for the other tournament teams to see.

“The competition is some of the best you’ll find in the southeast, so we’re looking to make a good first impression to the other universities for the fall,” Harris said.

Following this tournament, the men’s team will look ahead to the MTSU Fall Tournament, set for Sept. 21-Sept. 23.
