Men's tennis records 12 victories in day 1 at Steve Baras Classic

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Lipscomb men’s tennis team finished a competitive first day at the Steve Baras Fall Classic at Tennessee-Chattanooga.

“I’m really happy with the guys effort today all around,” said coach Mario Hernandez. “I thought we competed well and we are continuing to push ourselves to be the best we can be each day.”

The Bisons added 10 singles victories to their fall record including first and second round competitions. There were two doubles victories for the Bisons as well.

First round winners advanced to second round play. Losing players competed in a consolation round.

Daniel Hernandez, Stuart Tierney, Rob Mitchell and Miguel Cortez won both first and the second rounds.

"I think it was a really good day for the team,” Cortez said. “Everybody was able to play a lot of matches and gain more experience. We just have to keep improving, particularly in doubles."

David Salazar won the first round in a tough three-set battle against Jorge Varon of UTC. He later lost the second round against Kilani Sam in straight sets.

John Tougher won his first round against Connor Huertas of ETSU and later lost the second round.

"It was good to start off the tournament with a lot of wins,” said Tougher. “Especially, Rob and myself in the doubles. We are continuing to build on what we are working on."

Nacor Ibanez lost the first round in a tough three-set match.

"At the end of the day I think the positives today outweigh the negatives and the team is really looking forward to the next day of competition,” said Mitchell.

Coach Hernandez has set high expectations for his team in his first year as head coach.

“This college experience should be the best time of the guys’ lives,” coach Hernandez said. “It becomes a better experience when you are more successful and our guys understand that the more effort you put into your craft, the more success and joy you will get out of it.”
