Tough first day for men's tennis in Southern Intercollegiate

ATHENS, Ga. - The Bison men's tennis team kicked off the fall schedule on Friday at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships in Georgia.

Over the weekend the team will face some of the best teams and players in the South.

While the competition will be challenging, coach Mario Hernandez doesn’t want his team to focus too heavily on the results.

“We’re here to compete but we are also stressing that this is the beginning of this season’s journey and we are looking to continue to develop our guys,” Hernandez said.

The coaching staff is using the weekend as a chance to see the players for the first time this season in match situations as well as getting a preview of some Atlantic Sun teams.

Daniel Cardenas defeated Marco Almorin from Columbus State 6-4, 6-3.

Cardenas posted a 7-6 (4), 6-3 loss to Graham Bell of Stetson.

Eddie Gutierrez from Liberty defeated John Tougher 6-1, 7-5.

Rob Mitchell fell to Jordan Cox from Georgia Gwinnet 6-2, 6-1.

Alejandro Manzanares lost 6-3, 6-2 to Georgia’s Walker Duncan.

Thais Minet dropped a match to Stefan Burnett from Florida Atlantic by scores of 6-3, 6-4.

Mitchell and Tougher came up short in a double match with David Durham and Drew Wendel from Kennesaw State,

The championships continue through the weekend.
