Hernandez looking for tennis success at MTSU

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The Lipscomb tennis team will travel to Murfreesboro this weekend to participate in the MTSU Kickoff.

Head coach Mario Hernandez likes the matchups for his team this weekend.

Lipscomb will begin play on Friday afternoon when they face off with host MTSU at 2. MTSU went 13-13 last season with a 6-1 win over the Bisons.

The Bisons will then play Austin Peay at 9 a.m. Saturday. The Bisons defeated APSU 4-3 a season ago as the Governors went 14-8.

On the final day of play, Lipscomb will face UAB at 9 a.m. Sunday. The Blazers went 6-12 a year ago with a 5-1 victory over the Bisons.

“These three teams are all teams that are either our level or a little tougher opponents for us,” Hernandez said. “But I think we can win against any of these teams so it’s a perfect level of competition because there’s not going to be any of them that are far superior to us.”

Play will take place in a duel format, similar to what the teams will play in the spring, with three doubles matches and six singles matches.

Hernandez and his staff are looking to see the progression in his team’s strengths as they hit the midpoint of the fall season.

“We’re building a lot on what we saw in Georgia and applying that to our practices,” Hernandez said. “We’ve really focused on our strengths. We want to build around our strengths.”
