Men's tennis closes fall season at Commodore Scramble

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Lipscomb men’s tennis team starts play in the Commodore Scramble this morning at Vanderbilt’s tennis facility. The Bisons will face Vanderbilt, Alabama, MTSU and Louisville over the weekend.

As they finish the fall season, head coach Mario Hernandez hopes his team will take advantage of this opportunity to get better against top competition.

“Those four are programs that at some point in their program’s career have been ranked in the top 20,” Hernandez said. “I told the guys that should be something you guys are proud of. Maybe a couple of years ago we wouldn’t even be invited to these types of events. This is a credit to them.”

Hernandez doesn’t want his team to focus on the results over the course of the weekend but to focus on improving their games.

“I think the big thing is that no matter who you’re playing, there’s maybe a chance you’re playing a guy that’s ranked top 30 in the nation,” Hernandez said. “You bringwhat you do well to the table. If you can play your game and not worry about what they’re doing, or you can adjust to what they’re doing, then we’re doing the right things.”

“You always get up when you play against the bigger schools. If there’s any lack of motivation going into this weekend, that’s a problem. But I haven’t seen that from any of our guys. They’re pretty fired up.”

Play will run throughout the weekend from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day. With rain in the forecast for much of Friday, the schedule may be moved around as the day progresses.
