ATHENS, Ga. - After reaching the conference tournament at the end of the spring season, the Lipscomb men’s tennis team travels to Georgia for their first action of the 2016 fall season.
Lipscomb joins 31 other schools participating in the Southern Intercollegiate Championships in Athens, Georgia this weekend.
The tournament consists of 170 singles players along with 81 doubles teams in action featuring players from teams such as Florida, Mississippi State, Vanderbilt, Tennessee and Oklahoma, among others.
“The coaching staff wants to see the guys work in matches what we’ve been working on in practice,” Lipscomb head coach Mario Hernandez said. “We want to win but more importantly we want to see them focusing on what we’ve worked on.”
The Bisons return all but two players from last year’s squad and that allows the team to not only be familiar with their teammates but also with the program.
“The team chemistry has been great,” Hernandez said. “I’ve been really pleased with that.
“What the coaches notice more is the guys being familiar with the standard of the program. They know what is expected of them.”
That familiarity with the standard showed, as the Bisons were able to come into their first official practice last week and pick right back up with where they left off after the spring season.
“The intensity and level of play has been good,” Hernandez said. “The guys were hitting on their own which was great to see. They kept themselves sharp.”
Play is set to begin at 7 a.m. in Athens on Friday, but draws have yet to be released for Lipscomb to see their opponents.
“I feel like our level is good right now,” Hernandez said. “Tournament play is always different but I think the guys will rise to the occasion.”
