Showdown gives men's tennis players extra work

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The Lipscomb men’s tennis team continues a busy fall season as it travels to Murfreesboro for the Dick LaLance Showdown hosted by MTSU over the weekend.

The Bisons join MTSU, Memphis and rival Belmont in the four-man showdown.

Representing Lipscomb will be juniors Alejandro Manzanares, Thais Minet and Daniel Cardenas along with sophomore George Wong. Lipscomb head coach Mario Hernandez is looking for these players to get some extra work early in the season that they can’t get in practice.

“This is a good time for them to get some quality matches in,” Hernandez said. “You can only do so much in practice.

“We’ll be looking for them to apply what we’ve been working on into the matches. It’s best for us to be in these tournaments and playing these guys.”

The Bisons start play against Memphis on Friday before facing Belmont on Saturday and Middle Tennessee State on Sunday. Each match will consist of four singles matches and two doubles matches.

While the Bisons are only sending four players this weekend, Hernandez has scheduled many other opportunities for his guys to get matches in this fall.

“We plan on getting all of our guys matches this fall,” Hernandez said. “Fall is more of a developmental time for the team.”

With all but one player returning from last year’s squad, the Bisons have been able to hit the ground running so far this fall.

“The guys on the team know the standards that are set,” Hernandez said. “That’s a progression in our program. These guys don’t have to start from square one.”

Saturday’s match against Memphis begins at 10 a.m. with Sunday’s match against MTSU starting at 2 p.m.
