NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Lipscomb men’s tennis coach Mario Hernandez didn’t have to travel far to get a recruit for the 2017 class.
Hernandez has announced the signing of David Skrabut from Franklin, Tennessee.
"We are very excited to have David join our program at Lipscomb University,” Hernandez said. “David is a local guy and someone who will definitely add value to our team.
“My brother (Geoff, an assistant coach) and I developed an easy connection with David because he's passionate about his game and has the work ethic to back up that passion.”
Skrabut is ranked in the top 10 in the state of Tennessee and is No. 85 in the Southern Section of the USTA. He is also in the top 400 nationally.
“David was also passionate about coming to Lipscomb University and was very familiar with the campus already because he has had siblings attend the university,” Hernandez said. “Ultimately, you want people that want to be here and are excited about their opportunity to grow and develop here.”
Skrabut has been homeschooled. Hernandez was immediately impressed with Skrabut’s willingness to learn more about the game as he takes his skills to a higher level.
“Any time a recruit is continuously asking the coaches questions on what they need to do to improve and prepare for college tennis, that's a great sign,” Hernandez said. “Some guys never ask because they think they know it all, but David wanted more teaching which was great to hear.
“We couldn't be happier to help him to grow as a player, a student and ultimately as a man. David has already proven himself to be a strong player, but I know his best tennis is yet to come.”
