NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Lipscomb men’s tennis team fell 4-0 to Vanderbilt in their season opener on Friday.
“It was a tough match,” head coach Mario Hernandez said. “Vanderbilt played a great match and came out firing. I have to give them credit for how they came out.”
Vanderbilt jumped out to a 1-0 lead after taking the doubles point with wins at the second and third lines.
Pen Binet and Daniel Valent defeated Alejandro Manzanares and George Wong 6-0 at the third line. Baker Newman and Panu Virtanen sealed the doubles point with a 6-1 win over Thais Minet and Daniel Cardenas.
The Commodores took the momentum into singles play as they swept the three points.
Billy Rowe got the first win at the fifth line as he swept George Wong 6-0, 6-1.
At the second line, Cameron Klinger defeated freshman Victor Chaw 6-1, 6-3.
Baker Newman clinched the match for Vanderbilt as he beat Alejandro Manzanares 6-1, 6-2.
As they head into their second match of the season on Saturday against Tennessee Tech, Hernandez wants his team to quickly move on from Friday’s performance.
“Just put it behind you, it’s just one match,” Hernandez said. “We just have to give Vanderbilt a ton of credit.
“It’s one of those days. Don’t sweat it.”
The Bisons and Tennessee Tech have played close in recent years, splitting their last two matchups, both by 4-3 scores.
“Tech is always a tough opponent,” Hernandez said. “It will be a great second match for us.
“We just want the guys to enjoy it. We still need to just play our game. I expect everyone to be extremely motivated.”
Play against the Golden Eagles begins at 6 p.m. at Richland Country Club.
