Solid singles play not enough for men's tennis

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - For the fourth straight year, Lipscomb and Tennessee Tech played to a tight 4-3 decision in men’s tennis.

Unfortunately for the Bisons, they’ve come up on the wrong side of that score two years in a row.

“It was a great fight,” head coach Mario Hernandez said. “It was a great battle from our guys. It’s a great kind of rivalry. I’m really happy with how the guys fought. Everyone stepped up today.”

After splitting doubles matches at the one and three lines, Tennessee Tech’s Carlos Tajes and Marcos Bernardes pulled out a 7-6(4) win over Daniel Cardenas and Alejandro Manzanares to take the decisive doubles point.

The Bisons bounced back to make a match of it, however, reeling off three wins in singles play.

Playing at the two spot, freshman Victor Chaw notched his first win with a 6-3, 6-1 decision over Alberto Esteban.

“Chaw plays with such passion and intensity,” Hernandez said. “I’m really proud of him.

“He’s a hard worker on and off the court. I’m sure this is the first of many for him.”

After a strong 2016 campaign, junior Alejandro Manzanares got his first win of the season as he battled back after losing the first set to defeat Marcos Bernardes 1-6, 6-2, 6-2.

Cardenas rounded out things for the Bisons as he picked up a win at the fourth line in convincing fashion, defeating Marc Mila 6-3, 6-0.

Despite the loss, Hernandez remains confident in his team’s abilities.

“We didn’t get the win but I told the guys our team does have character,” Hernandez said, “Despite losing Friday and the doubles point in this match our guys really competed to put ourselves in position against a good TTU team.”

Hernandez also noted the solid efforts of the players at the bottom of the lineup.

“Our guys at the bottom of the lineup played particularly well too,” Hernandez said. “Depth this year is really strong. We had two guys out but the guys at the bottom put themselves in position to win.”

Lipscomb tennis is back in action Jan. 28 as they travel to Alabama to take on UAB.
