Men's tennis hangs tough in losing effort

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Lipscomb men’s tennis team fell to 0-3 on the young season with a 6-1 defeat to UAB on Saturday.

Despite the loss, head coach Mario Hernandez and his Bisons leave Alabama confident in their play.

“The guys did a really good job of putting ourselves in position to win the match,” Hernandez said. “We had opportunities across the board.

“Now we just need to capitalize on opportunities. The guys competed as well as they could.”

The Blazers (1-0) got the early advantage as they took the doubles point with wins at the first and third lines.

Eric Komati and Nikolai Manchev got things started for the Blazers with a 6-3 win over Lipscomb’s Thais Minet and George Wong.

Alejandro Manzanares and Daniel Cardenas leveled in with a 6-4 win over Anru Fourie and Kenton Parton at the second line.

Tim Dollman and Stefan Gonzalez sealed the point for UAB with a 7-6 tiebreak win over Rob Mitchell and Victor Chaw at the top spot.

Hernandez continues to see improvement in his team’s doubles play through their first three matches, despite not clinching the point yet.

“We’ve been one match away, really a couple points away, from winning the doubles point,” Hernandez said. “We’re right where we want to be.

“We are getting a lot better at doubles. I think we’re better than we were last season.”

The Blazers went on to take five of the six matches in singles play, but the matches were closer than the score would indicate.

Three of those five matches would go the full three sets, with UAB taking all three. With the experience and preparation, Hernandez believes the Bisons will start to see those matches go their way.

“It comes down to a little bit of confidence and expectation of how you’re going to play in that moment,” Hernandez said. “We have to keep getting mentally tougher and tougher and tougher.”

Lipscomb did pick up a win at the third line as Alejandro Manzanares defeated Stefan Gonzalez 6-4, 7-6.

The Bisons are back in action in a week as they travel to Clarksville for a match with Austin Peay Feb. 4.
