BOCA RATON, Fla. - As they head south for a pair of matches in Florida, the Lipscomb men’s tennis team is hoping to turn their close loses into wins.
The Bisons (5-10, 1-3) look to snap their three-match losing streak as they take on Florida Atlantic and Florida Gulf Coast on Friday and Saturday, respectfully.
Florida Atlantic (15-5) enters the weekend after having a six-match win streak snapped by MTSU in their last outing. Friday’s 1 p.m. match in Boca Raton gives the Bisons another match against a quality opponent as they continue to build experience to finish out the season.
“It gives us the chance to get another tough match under our belt against FAU on Friday,” Lipscomb head coach Mario Hernandez said. “We're looking forward to that battle.”
Lipscomb will then get back to conference action on Saturday for a 5 p.m. match with FGCU. The Eagles sit at 6-10 on the season, having dropped a 4-3 decision to NJIT in their last outing.
The Bisons’ last three matches have been decided by just a few games and despite coming up short in their most recent outings, Hernandez’s message for his team is the same heading into the weekend.
“I have told them to be excited for the next opportunity in front of you and work hard and prepare to win,” Hernandez said. “There is no secret or easy way to earn these conference victories. That's what makes them worth it.”
With just two matches remaining against conference opponents, there is a sense of urgency with the Bisons as they look to improve upon their conference standing. But Hernandez feels that can be an advantage for his team.
“There is (a sense of urgency) and that should serve us well,” Hernandez said. “The amount of college matches you get in your career is not unlimited, so enjoy and prepare for them as much as possible.”
