Manzanares, doubles teams lead men’s tennis to strong weekend at UL

LOUISVILLE, Ky.- The Lipscomb men’s tennis team made the most of its fall break weekend, finishing with one individual finalist and two doubles flight championships at the Louisville Invitational.

Senior Alejandro Manzanares rode four consecutive singles victories to the final match on Sunday, only to fall short of a title with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 loss to Louisville’s Ciro Lampasas.

However, the Venezuelan defeated Louisville’s Parker Wynn – ranked No. 90 by the ITA – on Saturday to pick up his first-career victory over a ranked opponent.

“Alejandro and I have talked that for us to have a dominant (No.1) he’s got to be the guy,” coach Geoff Hernandez said. “It’s fun to help someone take the next step in their game and he’s committing to doing that right now.”

The duo of Jorge Ortegon and Daniel Cardenas pulled out the overall victory in the “B” doubles flight, while Pedro Uribe and George Wong won the “C” doubles flight.

“The biggest takeaway is that we had some great results in doubles,” Hernandez said. “For the last week, we’ve committed to working on our doubles and we got immediate results.”

Hernandez admitted that doubles has not been a strength for his team – the Bisons went 16-22 in doubles play last season. While he’s not sure what the long-term player pairings will be, Hernandez is focused on changing the team’s outlook on doubles play.

“I have some (doubles) teams in mind, but it’s more about changing and setting the doubles culture at our program," Hernandez said. "We’re hoping to change the past results and make (doubles) a weapon this year.”

Ortegon went 2-1 in singles play, while freshman David Skrabut also picked up a victory – a 6-1, 6-4 decision over Butler’s Ari Gerstein.

The Bisons have a quick turnaround this week as they head to Knoxville for the ITA Regional. The tournament beings on Thursday and will run through Sunday.

“We’ll leave on Wednesday with our top four players,” Hernandez said. “You really don’t get a better opportunity than (the ITA regionals) to beat ranked opponents.”
