Singles sweep powers men's tennis to 7-0 victory over Austin Peay

NASHVILLE, Tenn.- Fresh off its first victory of the season last weekend, the Lipscomb men’s tennis team looked to continue its winning ways on Saturday at Richland Country Club.

The Bisons did just that, dismantling Austin Peay by winning the doubles point and all six singles matches en route to a 7-0 victory.

“We talked about going for the win in every spot this week,” coach Geoff Hernandez said. “I think that we wanted to show off our depth, and to do that, everyone had to be ready and focused. The performance that we had today was exactly what we wanted.”

Senior Alejandro Manzanares picked up his first singles victory of the season in a tight, three-set battle with Austin Peay’s Almantas Ozelis. Manzanares dropped the first set 5-7, but bounced back with set wins of 6-2 and 6-4 to take the match.

“It was a rough match, but it was great to get my first singles win of the season,” Manzanares said. “I didn’t play my best, so I’ll be prepared to do better next week.”

Hernandez said he was impressed with Manzanares’ resolve against a high-level opponent.

“(Ozelis) is a strong player,” Hernandez said. “But Alejandro knows he didn’t play well. If (Manzanares) is able to win when he’s not playing well, then he’s going to be dangerous once he gets going.”

Jorge Ortegon, Daniel Cardenas, Victor Chaw, Francesco Tacconi and Pedro Uribe also pulled out wins in singles play to round out the Lipscomb sweep.

“We didn’t have as much depth in the past,” Manzanares said. “Now, every match is a battle. It’s great to be able to rely on your teammates.”

Tacconi’s victory was the first of his young college career after joining the team in January.

“That will take a little pressure off him,” Hernandez said. “He’s adjusting (to college) well, and I’m excited for him to keep improving.”

For the third straight match, Lipscomb picked up the doubles point with victories in the No. 2 and No. 3 spots.

The duos of Ortegon/Cardenas and Tacconi/Uribe each won their doubles matches by a score of 6-2.

“I was excited that we won at No. 2 and No. 3 spots, and that we were at match point at No. 1,” Hernandez said. “We can sharpen some stuff, but there’s a belief in the doubles, which is huge because we’ve never had that.”

Lipscomb will continue its homestand by hosting Tennessee Tech (0-5) next Saturday. Match time is set for 5 p.m. at Richland Country Club. The Bisons will then hit the road on Sunday to take on Alabama at 6 p.m.
