Men's tennis looking to end 4-match slide this weekend

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – The Lipscomb men’s tennis team has fallen on hard times in recent weeks, dropping four consecutive matches following a 7-0 victory over Austin Peay on Feb. 3.

But the Bisons (2-5) have two chances for redemption this weekend. First up is a date with Jacksonville State on Saturday at 10 a.m. Lipscomb will then trek to Georgia to face Mercer on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.

The silver lining for Lipscomb is that three of its four losses during the streak have come by just one point. The Bisons suffered narrow, 4-3 losses at IUPUI and Ball State last weekend.

Bright spots for Lipscomb include the sophomore tandem of Victor Chaw and Jorge Ortegon, who are 4-1 and 4-2 in singles play, respectively.

Jacksonville State is off to a 7-1 start, although the Gamecocks have not faced nearly as difficult of a schedule as the Bisons. The Gamecocks went 3-0 in the Alabama State Invitational last weekend, defeating the host once and downing Alabama A&M twice. Joaquin Vallejo (6-1) and Guillermo Agost (5-1) represent JSU’s top two singles players.

Former ASUN-member Mercer also brings a 7-1 record into the weekend, boasting wins over Kennesaw State and Florida Atlantic. The Bears' lone loss came in the form of a 4-0 defeat to Georiga State in their season opener. Sam Philp (4-1) and Fernando Guardia (4-2) have been Mercer’s top singles performers.

Results from each match will be posted to the @LipscombMTEN Twitter as soon as they are available. A full recap from the weekend will be posted on Saturday evening.

Lipscomb will host rival Belmont on Friday, March 2 for another edition of the Battle of the Boulevard. The match is set for 11 a.m. at the Huston-Marsh-Griffith Tennis Center.
