NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Coach Geoff Hernandez and the Lipscomb men’s tennis team has received its first official signee for the 2018-19 season.
Jake Penny, of St. Albans, Hertforshire in England, recently signed scholarship papers to join the Bisons. Penny's arrival will help offset the loss of Alejandro Manzanares and Daniel Cardenas to graduation.
Hernandez said he is excited for Penny to arrive in Nashville in August, and he believes the incoming freshman will have a chance to make an immediate impact.
“He comes from a great family and will bring a lot to the team,” Hernandez said. “He will have time to develop in our system this coming fall, but I feel he is ready to go right out of the gate.”
Prior to signing with Lipscomb, Penny played with St. Columbas College – England’s equivalent of a high school. He is a three-sport athlete, having won county championships in soccer, cricket and tennis.
Hernandez said that Penny’s competitiveness on the court made him an attractive prospect.
“Outside of his character, the thing I love about Jake is how much he competes,” Hernandez said. “He is always playing tournaments and is eager to be in competition. (Coach) Andy Veal and I believe that is the key to being a great college tennis player.”
Penny, who plans to major in sport science and hopes to play tennis professionally, said that Lipscomb provided a great fit for him both athletically and academically.
“It is the best option for me, and I think I feel at home (at Lipscomb)," he said.
