Skrabut shines for Men's Tennis at Louisville Invitational

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Playing its third tournament in four weeks, the Lipscomb men’s tennis team is finding success in different spots of the lineup.

For head coach Geoff Hernandez, it was David Skrabut who stood out the most over three days in the Bluegrass State at the Louisville Invitational.

The sophomore finished the event 5-1 overall after winning his doubles draw and getting to the semifinals in singles play.

“David was the standout player this week for us,” Hernandez said. “He and Jake Penny did a great job of winning their respective flight and taking each match pretty handily. It was also great to see him play well in his singles draw as well.”

Skrabut and Penny cruised to the doubles title of the C draw, knocking off Belmont (8-4), Austin Peay (6-4) and Ball State (8-3) in the journey.

In singles, he downed Campbellsville (6-3, 2-6, 6-3) and host Louisville (7-5, 6-2) before falling to Ball State (0-6, 2-6) in the final four.

In total the Bisons finished 8-9 overall after going 4-8 in singles and 4-1 in doubles. Jorge Ortegon was the only other player to earn a first-round victory in singles, beating Belmont (6-0, 6-4). Francesco Tacconi picked up a victory over Campbellsville in the consolations bracket.

Tacconi and Ortegon teamed up in the B doubles draw for a win over Xavier (8-6), before ultimately losing to UT Chattanooga (2-6).

”It’s nice to have breakouts at all spots of the lineup,” Hernandez said. “We’ve had success at the top, and now with guys who are filling in and trying to work their way up, it’s really good to see.”

Lipscomb gets a little break before returning to the court Nov. 2-4 in Birmingham, Alabama at the CCB Collegiate Invitational.

“Everyone is learning,” Hernandez said. “We have about two weeks left of practice, so we have devised a plan to stir it up and change training so we can maximize practice.

“We are looking forward to the CCB Invitational. We are growing as a team. We just have to adapt and build from it.”
