Men's Tennis unveils 21-match spring slate

NASHVILLE - The Lipscomb men’s tennis team will return to action from winter break with a tough slate in front of them as head coach Geoff Hernandez announced Friday the team's 2019 spring schedule.

In Hernandez’s second season at the helm, the Bisons will look to build off of their fourth-place finish in the ASUN conference last season. The 21-match slate features 12 outings at home and three against NCAA Tournament participants from a season ago.

Lipscomb features five underclassmen and four upperclassmen led by junior Victor Chaw. The Lima, Peru native will look to build off his success in the fall and lead the charge for the Bisons this spring.

The Purple and Gold will open the season on the road with two matches at Louisville (January 18) and Austin Peay State (Jan. 25). Other notable road matches for the Bisons feature crosstown trips to Vanderbilt (February 22) and Belmont (March 2).

The Bisons will have their home opener on Jan. 26 against UAB, followed by another home match versus Furman (Feb. 1). Lipscomb will welcome Grand Canyon (Feb. 9), UT Chattanooga (Feb. 15) and North Dakota (Feb. 16) for its first three-match home stand of the season.

They will also host St. John's (Feb. 23), Presbyterian (March 11) and Georgia Southern (March 15) in nonconference play.

"The thing we're looking forward to the most is how many matches we have at home," Hernandez said. "We traveled a lot last year and with that we were able to bring a lot more teams to come play us at our facilities."

The Bisons will play seven league matches, with three of them at home - Kennesaw State (March 28), NJIT (April 4) and FGCU (April 4). They will go on the road to North Alabama (March 23) and Liberty (March 30) before closing out the regular season with trips to defending ASUN champ North Florida (April 11) and Stetson (April 13).

"With conference play, adding Liberty and North Alabama, there is going to be a lot of travel, but it's exciting because I'd say tennis is one of the stronger ASUN sports for sure," Hernandez said. "There's a lot of depth and our conference is just doing great in genera.

"For us to have good competition every time we play it can go where you're on a hot streak and dominating to you're going to have to be tough and dig your way through the season."

The Hatters will also host the confernece championship April 18-20.

"We're just going to prepare our best to be ready and compete each match one at a time and look to change the path of which we've gone about our seasons and look for more success," Hernandez said.
