LOUISVILLE, Ky.- The Lipscomb men’s tennis team will open its 2019 season on Friday as the Bisons are set to visit the Louisville Cardinals at 5 p.m. in Louisville, Kentucky at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
It will be the first-ever meeting between the programs in the regular season, despite playing one another on multiple occasions in the fall. Louisville opened its spring with a 6-1 victory against Hawaii last weekend.
Coach Geoff Hernandez will open his second spring season after taking over the helm of the program last season.
“With the season starting at Louisville, it’s a way for us to play some of our toughest competition early in the year,” Hernandez said. “It gives us an opportunity to not only compete and have success against a strong team, but also to have weakness exposes so we know what we need to train on before conference play.”
The Bisons faced a number of the Cardinal players in the fall, including in the Louisville Invitational in mid-October.
Sophomore David Skrabut shined for Hernandez in the Invite by going 5-1 overall, winning his doubles draw and getting to the semifinals in singles play.
After losing a pair of experienced players from a season ago, Hernandez has a youthful squad that features four sophomores and a lone freshman in Jake Penny that has brought a new flavor to the Lipscomb program.
The Bisons will rely heavily on juniors Victor Chaw, Jorge Ortegon and Pablo Caffarena to anchor the lineup. Chaw and Caffarena received the No. 57 doubles ranking following fall tournament action.
