Men's Tennis turns in big weekend with wins over Furman, Samford

NASHVILLE – After a 1-2 start to open the spring season, the Lipscomb men’s tennis team is starting to find its groove.

Lipscomb (3-2) edged Furman (1-3) by a score of 4-3 in Nashville on Friday, before going on the road Saturday to defeat Samford easily, 4-1.

“This was a huge weekend for our program,” Lipscomb head coach Geoff Hernandez said. “It’s a step in the right direction because on Friday we won a 4-3 match after losing so many of them in the last year. It was one of the gutsiest matches I’ve ever been involved with as a coach.

“And then today, we had really good singles performances on the road in an always tough environment. It’s big for our team.”

Freshman Jake Penny was the hero on Friday, as his 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 victory over Furman’s James Roelofse clinched the win for the Bisons.

“In his first dual match ever, down 2-5 in the third set, Jake comes back to clinch the victory,” Hernandez said. “I can’t say enough about the way he approached it mentally. I am beyond proud of him.”

Playing in the No. 3 slot, Jorge Ortegon went 2-0 in singles play on the weekend for the Bisons. He downed Furman’s Jake Munns 7-5, 6-7, 6-3 on Friday and then knocked off Samford’s Sami Kirberg in straight sets on Saturday, 6-1, 6-1.

“Jorge is playing really good tennis at the moment,” Hernandez said. “He had a big weekend for us on the court.”

Ortegon also teamed with Pedro Uribe to win both doubles matches and finish 4-0 on the weekend.

Saturday’s victory against the Bulldogs (2-3) was a little easier to come by as the Bisons took the doubles point for the fourth time in five matches this spring. Like Ortegon/Uribe, it was Victor Chaw and Pablo Caffarena who also swept their doubles action. They beat Furman’s Jake Munns/Jake Bhangdia 6-4 on Friday and then downed Samford’s Kirberg/Daniel Orlita 6-1.

Lipscomb is back in action with just a single match next week. The Bisons host Grand Canyon at 5 p.m. Saturday.
