FLORENCE, Ala. – The Lipscomb men’s tennis team took the doubles point and then went on to win five of the six singles matches to earn a 6-1 victory over North Alabama Saturday in the ASUN Conference opener in Florence, Alabama.
“Today was a good start to our conference play,” head coach Geoff Hernandez said. “We hope to build this one into a good rest of the conference season.”
The Bisons (6-8, 1-0) jumped on the scoreboard first with the doubles point after taking wins at each of the top two spots.
Victor Chaw and Pablo Caffarena cruised 6-1 on the top line, before Jorge Ortegon and Pedro Uribe clinched the point with a 6-4 win at number two.
“We have to play better at doubles,” Hernandez said. “At one we are doing great, but we’re figuring it out at two and three. The talent is there, we just have to be more committed and trust it more.”
Chaw and Caffarena improved to 8-3 on the year in doubles after winning their second-straight match.
Lipscomb clinched the match by winning the first three singles decisions over UNA (1-11, 0-1).
Francesco Tacconi got things rolling when he secured his third singles victory of the season 6-2, 6-0 over Tim Heslin on court six. Chaw then followed with a 6-2, 6-2 win in the top spot, before Ortegon downed Gustavo Girao 6-1, 6-1.
“I thought that we had the best team communication today between singles,” Hernandez said. “Each court was supporting one another and you could really feel the energy go up.”
Uribe and Jake Penny picked up their eighth and fifth victories of the season, respectively.
The Bisons return to action Monday for their final nonconference tilt, a makeup from a previous date, against Tennessee Tech. They will travel to Cookeville for a 1 p.m. start.
