Bisons Tennis falls short on senior day

NASHVILLE – The Lipscomb men’s tennis team dropped its senior day match against Florida Gulf Coast 5-2 on Saturday at the Huston Marsh Griffith Tennis Center in Nashville.

The Bisons (7-11, 2-3 ASUN) fell behind early as the visiting Eagles (10-8, 5-0) secured wins at the two and three spots. The top pairing of Victor Chaw and Pablo Caffarena were leading 3-2 in their match when it was called.

“Today was a really good and tough match against a really good FGCU team,” Lipscomb head coach Geoff Hernandez said. “I thought doubles was a little shaky, but the effort in singles is exactly what we wanted.”

In singles action four of the six matches went to three sets with each side winning a pair. The Eagles clinched the match with victories on courts three, four, five and six.

Chaw earned the first Lipscomb point of the day on the top line when he battled Juan Montes in three sets. Chaw took the first frame 6-2, before Juan Montes battled back to win the second by the same score and even the match. Chaw won the point in the third, 6-4.

Caffarena wrapped up the afternoon at No. 2 after having to come from behind to grab the win. After falling 4-6 in the first, the Bison won 6-4 and then earned the victory in a tiebreak, 7-6(4). It was his team-leading ninth singles win of the season.

“I thought we bounced back well after hitting our low point against Kennesaw State and we showed improvement,” Hernandez said. “If we can keep continuing to improve with each match, we should be a strong team for the conference tournament in a couple weeks.”

The Bisons honored lone senior George Wong in a brief ceremony before the match.

“We will celebrate George tonight, and all he has done for this team,” Hernandez said.
