Men's Tennis earns No. 6 seed in ASUN Championship

DELAND, Fla. – The Lipscomb men’s tennis team will return to the ASUN Conference Championship for the fourth year in a row, despite falling 5-2 on the road at Stetson Saturday afternoon in the regular season finale.

Lipscomb dropped to 7-13 overall and 2-5 in the ASUN, while Stetson improved to 11-11 and 3-4.

Locked into a tie with the Hatters for fifth place in the league standings entering the day, this match determined the final two seeds in next week’s championship. Stetson’s win secured it the No. 5 seed, while the Bisons earned the No. 6.

Saturday’s match followed a similar pattern throughout the season as the Bisons were competitive for most of the match, but were unable to get points to fall their way.

The host Hatters took the first doubles match on court two 6-3, before the duo of Victor Chaw and Pablo Caffarena pulled Lipscomb even with a 6-4 victory on the top line. Stetson eventually earned the doubles point by winning a tight 7-6 decision on court three.

Singles play saw both teams play even through the first four matches, before ultimately securing the match with wins at four and five.

Caffarena and Chaw each won their matches in straight sets. Caffarena took the first singles match at No. 2 by a score of 6-4, 6-0 over Clement Hamel. After back-to-back wins from Stetson on courts six and three, Chaw outhustled the Hatters top line 7-5, 7-5.

The wins were the 10th of the season for both Caffarena and Chaw. The duo also improved to 12-3 on the year in doubles after winning their last six outings. They finish undefeated at 5-0 in ASUN play.
