Chaw, Caffarena earn ASUN Doubles Pair of the Year

NASHVILLE – Lipscomb men’s tennis earned a handful of honors Wednesday night at the ASUN Conference’s postseason banquet in DeLand, Florida prior to the championship getting under way on Thursday.

Juniors Victor Chaw and Pablo Caffarena brought home one of the league’s top honors after being voted the ASUN Doubles Pair of the Year after going 12-3 in the No. 1 position that included a perfect 5-0 mark in conference play.

It marks back-to-back years that the Bisons have earned the top doubles pairing after Chaw and Alejandro Manzanares won it a season ago.

Chaw landed on the ASUN postseason awards list for the third consecutive season after being named All-Freshman in 2017 and Second Team All-ASUN in 2018.

He put together a junior campaign that was good enough to see him earn a unanimous First Team selection, only one of four to do so.

The Lima, Peru native finished the regular season 10-7 at No. 1 singles overall and cruised through the ASUN to a 5-1 mark. Seven of his victories came in straight sets and he enters the championship on a three-match win streak

Combined with his and Caffarena’s tandem record, Chaw went 10-1 against ASUN competition between singles and doubles. They won six consecutive matches to close out the season.

Between the fall and spring seasons, the duo was 18-5 overall, earning four more wins than any tandem in the conference.

In his first year as a Bison, Caffarena matched Chaw for the team lead in wins for both singles and doubles. He went 10-8 on the season at No. 2 singles and 12-3 at No. 1 doubles.

He posted an 8-2 home record in singles and went 3-3 in ASUN action. Finished 8-3 against league opponents between both singles and doubles.

Caffarena also showed out in the classroom, as his 3.83 GPA as a Corporate Management major earned him a spot on the ASUN All-Academic team.

Lipscomb opens up the ASUN Championship at 4 p.m. CT on Thursday with a first-round matchup with No. 3 North Florida. The winner will advance to the semifinals on Friday where No. 2 Liberty is lurking.

Updates will be posted on the ASUN tournament central page, as well as the team’s Twitter (@LipscombMTEN). A full recap with results will be available on Thursday evening.
