Mario Hernandez has been named as the head coach of the Lipscomb Bisons tennis team. It is his first head coaching assignment on the college level in his career.
Hernandez, 26, played for Lipscomb University from 2008-2011. He was the captain of the team his senior year.
In July 2012 Hernandez was named a graduate assistant coach for the men’s team. The 2012-2013 team finished with its best result ever in the Atlantic Sun Conference. The Bisons, the No. 6 seed, reached the semifinals of the conference tournament with a victory over No. 3-seeded Stetson. The Bisons lost to eventual champion ETSU.
Hernandez has been coaching since he was 16 years old working with both junior players and adult groups. From January through July in 2012 he coached at the North Shore Winter Club in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada working with junior players, adults, and professionally-ranked players.
Tennis is a family tradition for Hernandez. He started playing when he was 4. His mother has also been a tennis coach.
Hernandez was born in Houston, Texas July 22, 1987. When he was 16 he moved with his parents, Jane and Mario Hernandez, Sr., to Vancouver.
He grew up playing in state tournaments in Texas as well as playing in some national events. Hernandez also played in national and provincial tournaments and was ranked in the top 40 in Canada.
Hernandez graduated with a degree in Political Science and a minor in History.
He is single and lives in Nashville.
