Chastain sets another track record
Ryan Chastain continued his record breaking senior season for the Bisons by breaking the Outdoor Track school record for 5,000m at the University of Alabama Relays.

His time of 14:34.97 broke David Curd’s 1988 record of 15:00.94.

“Ryan ran a great 5000m,” coach Bill Taylor said. “He is going to drop his time significantly once we get through this toughest training phase.”

Five other school records were set at the meet. Sara Stephens broke her own 400m school record with a time of 57.36, while relay records in the women’s 4x800, women’s DMR, Men’s 4x200m, and men’s 4x1500m were set.

“ Sara looked terrific in the 400m,” Taylor said. “She basically ran a perfect race and did it from the outside lane, which is very tough to do. That was a very fun race to watch. Amanda ran another very solid race and Louisa is putting together a series of great races.”

Amanda Twigg also had another great middle distance race, running a new PR of 4:43.08 for 1500m, while Louisa Van Batavia led the way in the 5,000m with a time of 18:35.34. Brittany Duerk threw the javelin 113-9 in her first meet for Lipscomb.

Andrew Jones posted a season best in the men’s 800m, running 1:56.58, while Paul Wright broke the 2-minute barrier for the first time with a 1:59.81. Bobby Bassett went 49.20 for 400m. Alex Jerkins posted his second best throw of the season in the shot put with a mark of 48-00.75.

“This was a tough meet for us,” Taylor said. “It was one of the toughest weeks of training for the season and the first week back from spring break. We had some solid performances, but I felt like we weren’t sharp at all.

It was very windy too, which definitely had an effect, especially in the relays. Almost all of the relays got spread out after the first leg, so most people from most teams were running completely alone and into that big backstretch wind.”

Taylor is also seeing progress with the field events. Brittany Duerk, who plays for the Lady Bisons basketball team, made her first appearance in a meet throwing the javelin.

“Our field events are getting better too,” Taylor said. “Brittany just joined us from the women’s basketball team and had a nice throw in the javelin. Robby (assistant coach Robby Cherry) told me she actually had a much longer throw that they didn’t mark because of minimum measurement rules. So I think she is going to do very well in the future.

“Alex Jerkins has put together two very solid meets in a row with the shot. He’s getting consistent at that next level. “All in all a very encouraging weekend given where we are in the season and training.”
