Sunday, January 30, 2011Freshman Dani Walker posted two event wins and a heat win to highlight a great meet for Lipscomb at the TSU Invitational Saturday at Tennessee State University.
Dani started the day by anchoring the Lipscomb A Distance Medley Relay to an eight-second victory over the Lipscomb B team, and over a minute ahead of third place in the 11-team field. A few hour s later Dani led a Lipscomb 1-2-4 finish in the women’s 800m in a time of 2:18.75. She wrapped up the day by anchoring the women’s 4x400m Relay to a four second victory in their heat, with a 58.8 400m split.
“Everyone competed hard,” coach Bill Taylor said. “Dani was a highlight for the women’s team with three wins. It was very impressive, especially since she is sick. She’s a very gutsy runner.
“We let some of the middle distance runners compete in open events for the first time this season. Amanda Twigg won the mile. Dani, Katie Bunker and Alyssa Miller ran amazing in the 800. Our top two DMR teams ran away for a 1-2 finish, and our 4x400m relay ran within a second of the Lipscomb Indoor school record. I think that’s a pretty good day.”
Another milestone was achieved by freshman Sadie Stone who set a new Lipscomb Indoor school record for the 55-meter hurdles, finishing 13th overall in 9.19, bettering Hannah Joiner’s previous record of 9.61 set in 2007.
Field events led the way for the men. Alex Jerkins picked up a second place finish in the shot put with an indoor personal best of 47 feet 11.25 inches, and a third in the weight throw with a toss of 38 feet 1.5 inches.
In the jumps, Logan Ray finished third in the triple jump in 45 feet 9.25 inches, and set a PR in the long jump with a leap of 20 feet 8.5 inches. Adam Austin picked up a fourth in the high jump with an indoor PR of 6 feet 6 inches.
Middle distance success came with Jeff Hoover’s third place finish in the men’s mile in 4:34.89, and the men’s Distance Medley Relay’s second place finish.
Tucker Peabody represented the sprints well with a new indoor school record for 200m of 22.45, eclipsing a record he previously shared with Bobby Bassett. Bobby Bassett won his heat of the men’s 400m in 50.55.
Also of note, Dillon Seigenthaller competed in the University of Houston heptathlon this weekend, finishing seventh out of 17 men in his first ever heptathlon. Dillon also broke Burton Elrod’s school record in the event, posting a score of 4,419 points.
“The big thing for me was to see everyone competing so hard, and the team cheering and supporting each other so well,” Taylor said. “It was a good second meet for us and gives the team a lot to build on.
“We had a lot of sick people today, some of which competed, some of which couldn’t. Amanda gutted out a win in the mile and helped the DMR win, but she looked miserable. She and others have to be very encouraged about their performances in far less than ideal circumstances and so early in the season.”
The teams are back in action Feb. 4-5 at the Niswonger Invite at ETSU in Johnson City.
“I’m really looking forward to our meet at ETSU,” Taylor said. “It will be our first chance to see most of the long distance runners in action, and all of our middle distance athletes will get to compete in individual events. I think everyone is excited to see the whole team in action.”
