Bisons, Lady Bisons have successful first day at UNF
Jacksonville, Fla. - The Bisons and Lady Bisons started the Outdoor Track & Field season Friday with a new school record, several high finishes and a bunch of PRs at the UNF Spring Invite.

Dani Walker (FR – Wichita, Kan.) led the way for Lipscomb, continuing her record¬¬-breaking campaign from indoors, by breaking the outdoor school record for 800 meters. Her time of 2:13.32 broke Amanda Twigg’s school record of 2:14.30, set last year. It was also Dani’s all time PB for 800 meters.

Dani won her heat and the race, out of 59 800-meter runners. She was followed closely by Amanda Twigg (SO – Cumberland, Md.) who finished third overall in 2:15.99. Priya Pappu (SO – Santa Clara, Ca.) won the second heat of women’s 800m with a new PR of 2:18.37. Catherine Beals (JR – Glasgow, Ky.) made it three for three for Lipscomb, winning the third heat of the women’s 800m in a new PR of 2:26.11. Lauren Stewart nearly made it four for four for the Lady Bisons, finishing second at the line in the fourth heat.

Ryan Powell (SO – Brentwood, Tenn.) was the biggest surprise on the day after he finished second out of 36 long jumpers with a leap of 21-7, on less than a week of training for it. It had been two years since he last long jumped.

Tucker Peabody (FR – Memphis, Tenn.) continued to show his talent in the sprints by qualifying for tomorrows finals in the men’s 100m.

Alex Jerkins (JR – Nashville, Tenn.) picked up a fifth place in the shot put, Sara Stephens picked up a sixth in the 400m with a time of 57.71, while Andrew Jones and Isaiah Greer finished eighth and ninth respectively in the men’s 800m with times of 1:56.90 and 1:57.63.

“Great first competition of the outdoor season across the board for us,” said coach Bill Taylor. “The effort, attitude and fight were all there today in every event. It’s all I can ask of our athletes. We had a really, really good day.”

Competition continues Saturday with day two of the UNF Spring Invite.
