JACKSONVILLE, Tenn. – The Lipscomb men’s and women’s track and field teams finished the opening outdoor meet on a positive note led by the 1500 meter run on Saturday at the UNF Spring Break Invite in Jacksonville, Fla.
The 1500m was won by junior Katie Bunker who was victorious in the event with a time of 4:39.63. She finished just under two seconds in front of teammate Madelin Talbert. The freshman clocked in at 4:41.54. Amanda Twigg and Tessa Hoefle finished in back-to-back placing’s as Twigg crossed the finish line in 4:43.81 for sixth. Hoefle’s time of 4:44.39 garnered seventh place overall.
Senior Ryan Whitley took the gold medal in the 400 meter hurdles, finishing just ahead of teammate Andrew Wolf. Whitley finished in 55.77 seconds while Wolf crossed the line at 56.34 seconds.
On the heels of two second-place finishes yesterday, sophomore Houston Ward claimed the bronze medal in the hammer throw. Ward had a toss of 40.25 meters to finish third, almost six meters ahead of fourth place.
“I was really happy with the effort in the 1500m and the hurdles,” Bill Taylor, director of track and field and cross country said. “Houston also had another great performance.
Sophomore Gemikal Prude finished second in the high jump with a leap of 2 meters. His jump was just two inches short of the top prize.
“It was a nice start to the outdoor season,” Taylor said. “We have a lot of work to do sill, but very encouraging.”
