BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Lipscomb track and field teams competed in the Birmingham Southern Invitational on Saturday in Birmingham, Ala. The Purple and Gold claimed two gold medals on the second day of the meet to go along with numerous personal records.
Freshman Nelson Scott finished at the top of the podium in the 400-meter hurdles. Scott finished just under two seconds ahead of second place Demetrius Peacock of Alabama A&M in a time of 55.42 seconds.
Lipscomb took the top-two and five of the top-six spots in the 1500m. Junior Katie Bunker and senior Amanda Twigg claimed gold and silver with times of 4:40.27 and 4:45.05, respectively. Artrailia Lesane of Alabama State finished third as the Lady Bisons finished fourth, fifth and sixth led by sophomore Kayla Droessler. Junior Alex Newby and sophmore Renee Menzie finished fifth and sixth, respectively.
Jared Wingerter finished second in the 5000-meter run as teh freshman set a personal record with a time of 14:57.49.
Junior Tucker Peabody finished second overall and as the top collegiate runner in the 200m. Peabody finished in 21.49 seconds, five hundredths of a second behind winner David Dickens who was running unattached.
Houston Ward finished fourth in the discus and was the top-overall collegiate finisher with a throw of 47.98 meters. The personal record for the sophomore finished behind three unattached competitors including a 55.04-meter throw from Hayden Reed. Ward also finished fourth in the shot put with a toss of 14.56 meters.
Lipscomb picked up a pair of fourth places finishes in the men’s high jump and pole vault. Kevin Floyd vaulted 4.25 meters to finish just off the podium behind a pair of competitors from Samford and one from the host Birmingham Southern. Adam Austin had a leap of 1.9 meters to finish fourth in the high jump.
Braeghtyn McAleese and April Terry each set personal records in the women’s discus. McAleese, a freshman, had a throw of 38.43 meters while Terry, a sophomore, had a toss of 35.93 meters.
The track and field teams return to Birmingham next weekend to compete in the Samford Invitational.
