NASHVILLE, Tenn. – After defending his 200-meter dash title at the Atlantic Sun Conference Championships and garnering three other all-conference awards, Lipscomb junior Tucker Peabody has been named the A-Sun Most Outstanding Track Athlete of the year.
The sprinter from Memphis, Tenn., scored 22 individual points at the A-Sun Championships to help bolster his case as the top-performer, which is voted on by the league coaches.
“He had an impressive A-Sun Championships,” Bill Taylor, director of cross country and track and field, said. “He ran the fastest time ever while defending his 200-meter title, running the second fastest time in the 100-meter dash, ran a 46.3 split in the 4X400 relay and got another medal in the 4X100 relay. The 4X4 was a humongous breakthrough for him.”
Peabody claimed the 200-meter dash title in an A-Sun record 20.68 seconds. He took second place in the 100-meter dash in 10.36 seconds, which is the second-fastest time in A-Sun history. To cap the championships off, Peabody came from behind to claim the 4X400-meter relay victory, making a pass in the final 50-meters for the win.
“The way he won the event puts a huge exclamation point on his performances there,” Taylor said. “It is what your superstar is supposed to do. He is supposed to take whatever is handed him and make the best of it. He was impressive and the coaches agreed with it.
Sprints coach Marcus Evans agreed with Taylor that the team came first and it showed in the relay.
“He had a great team effort that he put forth at the championships,” Evans said. “It is evident with the other coaches that he worked hard and had a great meet. We were looking for him to help the team as much as he could and that is exactly what he did. It was a great way to cap off the meet with the come-from-behind win in the relay over North Florida at its home track.”
For the A-Sun competition season, Peabody collected four Track Athlete of the Week honors including three in a row from April 10 to April 24. It was the most captured this season by an individual athlete.
Peabody has qualified for two events at the NCAA National Preliminary round beginning Thursday. He will run the 100 and 200 meter dashes in Greensboro, N.C.
