USTFCCCA honors Lipscomb Track and Field

NEW ORLEANS – The Lipscomb men’s and women’s track and field squads have been honored by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association for their academic accomplishments during the 2013 season.

The men’s squad finished the spring semester with a 3.30 GPA, placing them 12th in the nation.

Sporting a 3.41 GPA, the women’s squad finished 22nd overall.

“I have mixed emotions about this,” Bill Taylor, director of cross country and track and field, said. “On one side we have achieved national academic honors every season I have been here. We lead the Atlantic Sun in GPA and both teams are in the top 25 of the entire nation. On the other side, I truly expect more. Finishing 12th and 22nd respectively is a down year for us academically.

“I know that might sound a bit harsh. Our goals are to achieve excellence, top of the nation excellence in every aspect of our program. We expect to win a national championship soon. We expect to serve the world through service and mission trips. We expect to grow our athletes and develop them as people. We also expect to be the best in the nation academically.”

The men’s squad was the only A-Sun team represented while the women’s team was the highest of five schools represented.

“We could sit back after winning the A-Sun and say we’ve accomplished enough,” Taylor said. “I will never do that. Likewise, we could sit back and say we are always a top-25 team academically every year, so that’s good enough.

“The men have been the top team in the nation during my time here, and the women have been as high as second. Most years we have been getting both the men and the women in the top five at the same time. So we know we can do that every year.”

Individually, the Purple and Gold had two athletes honored. Rising senior’s Tucker Peabody and Dani Walker were named to the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field team after being stellar on the track and achieving success in the classroom.

“I’m happy for Tucker and Dani,” Taylor said. “I know they will continue to strive for individual academic success. With our team rising in athletic performance, I’m sure we will have a lot more individuals earn All-Academic honors this coming year and the years beyond.”
