NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Lipscomb triple jumper Phillip Smith will be heading to Eugene, Oregon to take part in the USA Track and Field Junior National Championships July 5 and 6.
“This marks the third year in a row that we have qualified at least one of our Bison freshmen to the USATF Junior Outdoor National Championship meet,” said Luke Syverson, assistant track and field coach. “This is a great opportunity for Phillip to get big meet experience that will only help him continue to grow as a Bison.”
The competition is designed to exhibit the skills of the top American track and field athletes under the age of 20.
Qualifiers include standout high school athletes as well as college freshmen who have made a strong impact on their respective track and field programs.
The top performers from Junior Nationals will earn a spot on the American team that will compete at the 2014 International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Junior Championships later in July.
Smith will be one of 13 men’s triple jumpers competing in Oregon. The top two finishers will earn a spot on the USA National Team.
“Phillip capped off a great freshman campaign by taking runner-up honors in the triple jump at the Atlantic Sun Outdoor Championships jumping a mark of 14.92 meters that qualified for this meet,” Syverson said. “He has added almost three feet to his triple jump personal record in his first year in our program.”
Syverson feels the meet poses many training challenges as Smith’s meet season started at the beginning of January.
“He has been training hard this past month since school let out and is excited for the chance to compete and represent Lipscomb at the national level,” Syverson said.
Smith will join the list of Lipscomb freshmen to compete at Junior Nationals.
Four Lipscomb athletes qualified for the competition last year including Madi Talbert, Jared Wingerter, Grant Stromberg, and Daniel Gardner.
Smith’s matchup with the other men’s triple jumpers is scheduled for Sunday afternoon.
