NASHVILLE - With the regular season winding down Lipscomb track and field heads to Athens, Georgia for the Georgia Invite in its last meet before the Atlantic Sun Conference Outdoor Championships.
"This weekend is a tune up before next weekend’s Atlantic Sun Conference Championships,” Lipscomb Director of Cross Country and Track and Field Bill Taylor said.
As the A-Sun Championships wait on the horizon, the focus for Taylor and the Bisons this week is on working out any kinks in their performance.
"Some on our team are dropping down in distance,” Taylor said. “Our distance runners are going a max of 3000m. Some will run their first 1500m of the season as a speed tune-up. Some of our 800m runners are dropping down to the 400m.”
Although there will be an upheaval of events during the meet for several runners, some of the athletes will still be focused on his or her qualifying time for the conference championships.
"Others are still trying to get themselves qualified for the best heat at conference,” Taylor said. “So there is a mix of goals this weekend.”
The final meet of the season can be a crossroads. It allows for both reflection on the season up to that point and anticipation towards what is coming for the Bisons.
"It's crazy how quickly the season has gone by,” Taylor said. “This is the part of the season we live for though. We are about to be in the championship portion. Going after A-Sun titles, qualifying for the National Prelims and moving on to the National finals are all the goals we had when we started the season.
"We are looking forward to the performances this weekend and to getting fully into the Championships."
