JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Thursday begins day one of the NCAA Division I National Championship East Region Prelims for Lipscomb track and field.
The Bisons placed six athletes in five events across the competition. In each event, the top 12 performers advance to the National Championship Finals in Eugene, OR. How those 12 are determined depends on the event.
"We are really excited to get going with the competition down here,” Lipscomb Director of Cross Country and Track and Field Bill Taylor said. “We have had two days of practice at the track, meetings and all that. It will be nice to compete and do what we came down here to do.”
Freshman Karly Hibbard will compete in the javelin on Thursday at 11 a.m. (CST), making her the first Bison to take the stage for the meet. The top 12 marks advance to National Finals. Each thrower gets three attempts, and is ranked by their best throw.
"Karly kicks things off tomorrow,” Taylor said. “She's looking good in practice and as a freshman really has nothing to lose. She won here two weeks ago, so she has a good level of comfort with the facility."
On Friday, Gemikal Prude will compete in the high jump at 4 p.m. followed by Wayne Newman in the 110m high hurdles at 4:30. At 7:50, Madi Talbert and Paige Stoner will take on the 3000m steeplechase.
On Saturday, Newman will take part in the next part of the 110m high hurdles quarterfinals at 7:20 p.m. if he advances from Friday’s competition. Then, at 8:05, Talbert, Stoner and Larson all will race in the 5000m.
