Track & field to open indoor season at Vanderbilt

NASHVILLE – The Lipscomb track and field will begin the season close to home with the Vanderbilt Opener on Saturday.

The meet, which starts at 10:30 at the Vanderbilt Indoor Multi-Purpose Facility, will feature all of the Bison track and field athletes except for the distance runners.

“We are excited about the meet this weekend at Vandy our non-distance athletes have been working hard at early morning practices and small group events sessions,” Lipscomb track assistant coach for sprints and hurdles Marcus Evans said. “December meets are always good to get a barometer of how our fall training has gone, while also finding ways to improve over a long Christmas break.”

Lipscomb brings back several All-Conference performers from the 2014-15 indoor track and field season including the two-time defending Atlantic Sun Champion in the 60m high hurdles, Wayne Newman.

“Wayne Newman is coming off two consecutive A Sun titles in the hurdles and we are looking to continue that success,” Evans said. “Pole vault record holder Kevin Floyd is looking to finish his career with an A-Sun title in the pole vault, a goal that has been just out of reach in previous years.

“On the women's side Abby Newby is making her 2015-2016 debut in pursuit of our multi-event records.”

Among the participating teams for the meet will include “Battle of the Boulevard” rival Belmont, Austin Peay, Memphis, MTSU, Tennessee Tech, and Trevecca.

Outside of Tennessee schools, Louisville, Murray State, and Western Kentucky will be competing on Saturday as well.
