NASHVILLE – With a successful regular season in the books, the Lipscomb track and field squad will head to Winston-Salem, North Carolina over the weekend for the Atlantic Sun Indoor Championships.
As the competition begins on Friday morning and continues on through Saturday, the Bisons believe they are hitting their stride at the perfect time heading into the meet.
“We’ve had a great indoor season so far,” Lipscomb Director of Cross Country and Track and Field Bill Taylor said. “We have a lot of kids getting healthy at the right time, and they put up several great performances at out last meet. We’re expecting this to be a great meet.”
Of the many Bisons ranked near the top of the conference standings in the event they are competing in, junior Wayne Newman stands out as the favorite to potentially win multiple events.
“Wayne has a bunch of events that he’s either the favorite in or one of the top two,” Taylor said. “Our distance crews on both the men’s and women’s side are really strong as well.
“We think we could score the most points we ever have, and maybe get our best finish ever in conference history.”
With the outdoor season quickly approaching after the completion of the indoor slate, the Bisons use the indoor schedule as both a barometer for success and a training ground for later in the season.
“We could be as high as second on the men’s side and third on the women’s side if a lot of things go right,” Taylor said. “Indoor we kind of train through to a great extent, so we’d like to collect as many individual conference titles as we can as well as set some records. It’s a combination of those things.”
